In 2024 one of my missions is to redefine the way we look at estate planning. You most likely read the words estate planning and immediately thought of it as that line item on your never ending to-do list.

And here’s why I see most people avoid checking this one off. It’s a hard conversation to have. Nobody wants to think about an emergency, the end of their life, or what happens after they are gone. But my mission is to have estate planning empower you.

What if instead of talking about estate planning, we were having a conversation around leaving a legacy?

I want you to meet Emma- corporate powerhouse, mom of two little ones, and proud New Yorker. In the old way of estate planning a stuffy attorney would be breathing down her neck telling her she needs a guardian otherwise the state will appointment one for her should she and her husband pass. While this isn’t wrong the fear of this idea can be paralyzing.

In the new way of thinking Emma and her husband have a thorough conversation around which family members or friends would be the best fit to raise their children. Talking about who is in the best health, aligns with their values, and morals that would raise their children the way Emma and her husband envisioned.

With the old way of estate planning, Emma would be instructed to name some beneficiaries. In the new way of estate planning, labeling beneficiaries or setting up a trust (when appropriate) would be used to build multi-generational wealth and have her assets support causes close to her heart. Emma tragically lost her mom to breast-cancer before she ever got to meet her grandchildren. Funding cancer research to find a cure for this disease so she and her children never have to suffer has become a passion of Emma’s. Something she can still support even when she is no longer here.

Estate planning is something that will always mean the end of life. But that doesn’t mean it has to be this morbid and difficult conversation to have that we avoid at all costs.
